Sailors are ruled by tradition and custom. The following
are five fundamental rules that should be remembered at all
times.
Entering port: when entering port,
the boat should be in good order (no towels or clothes hanging
out to dry) and the crew should wear more than just a swimming
costume.
Fenders: these should
be prepared in advance so they can be quickly slung over the
sides to protect the boat and its neighbours.
Mooring ropes: if using
the same mooring bitt as your neighbour, the last to arrive
usually passes his rope under that of his neighbour so as
not to create difficulties if they want to depart before you.
Shoes: Always take off
your shoes before boarding, especially if it’s not your
own boat.
Permission: Always ask
permission before going aboard someone else’s boat.
If possible, embark from the bow so as not to disturb those
in the cockpit.
